This was exactly what I was looking for in place of paying for/having installed a trailer hitch. The carrier is as stable as your placement of the metal hooks and your ability to tighten the straps. There is excess slack in the nylon straps so you can make it even more secure by tying a knot. That being said, I have comfortably carried both a hybrid and mountain bike on the highway. Hybrid ways 26 pounds and mountain bike is probably around 35 pounds.
